The power plant uses the height of fall from Lake Styggevatnet to the Jostedalselva River. The reservoirs lie at the foot of the Jostedalsbreen glacier.
Lake Styggevatn is regulated between 1,200 and 1,110 metres above sea level, and the dam on the lake is 55 metres high. The reservoir capacity is around 350 million cubic metres.
Lake Kuppvannet is also a reservoir for the power plant, and is regulated between 1,263 and 1,190 metres above sea level.
Water is also collected from several stream intakes.
The total height of fall from Lake Styggevatn to the power station is 1,186 metres. After the water is used in the power plant, it is led in a long outlet tunnel to Sognefjord.
